Lead Developer, Network Automation

Job Purpose

Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) owns and operates the world’s most advanced financial networks that are tasked with carrying market data around the world. Our networks are designed from the ground up to meet our unique performance constraints while remaining impeccably reliable. By joining the Network Engineering team you’ll aid us in maintaining these networks as well as helping us continue to push the envelope with state-of-the-art technologies.

In this role, you will gain invaluable hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment and cutting edge technologies in the area of computer networks. You will also gain a solid knowledge of network protocols, concepts, and solutions. This is also an opportunity to gain a good understanding of the operations of a global organization, how global teams interact, how projects are developed and implemented, and how strategies are executed.

The Lead Developer, Network Automation is part of our Network Engineering Development team working on various projects ranging from long-distance wireless networks to network automation tools. You will be exposed to all layers of the development lifecycle and will learn the enterprise SDLC processes at ICE.


  • Write and maintain software that interacts with various network devices, tools, databases, market data feeds, and user input
  • Gather requirements from relevant business owners
  • Keep project stakeholders updated on progress
  • Help ensure an orderly release management and SDLC process is followed
  • Meet with technologists from other teams to ensure all new software appropriately captures the requirements and uses the best data sources in a secure manner
  • Create and maintain documentation of system components and their operation
  • Write unit and integration tests that ensure system reliability
  • Help train end-users on the use of any new tooling
  • Take ownership of tools and sub-components

Knowledge and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • Strong communication skills
  • Able to work with others on both an ad hoc and project team basis across organizational boundaries
  • Intermediate software development skills in at least one software language
  • Familiarity with network switching and routing concepts
  • Familiarity with GNU/Linux operating systems


  • In-depth knowledge of networking protocols and deployments (e.g. BGP, MPLS, OSPF, IS-IS, VLANs, prefix-lists, ACLs, etc)
  • Knowledge of Juniper products and Junos OS
  • Knowledge of Arista products and EOS
  • Development ability in one or more of the following: Python, Typescript/JavaScript, Go (golang), C, C++
  • Ability to use RESTful APIs
  • Ability to work with JSON, XML, YAML, and proprietary data interchange formats
  • Familiarity with a DVCS (e.g. git) and working on a multi-member project utilizing such tool
  • Familiarity with development dependency management tools (e.g. npm, pip, maven, etc)
  • Familiarity with functional and integration testing
  • Familiarity with SDLC tooling (e.g. Jenkins, JIRA, github/bitbucket, etc)
  • Knowledge of general network principles and technology in WAN and LAN infrastructures
  • Knowledge of common network automation services (e.g. NETCONF, eAPI, etc)
  • Knowledge of IT automation tooling (e.g. Ansible, Puppet, Salt) and its application to network device automation
  • Self-organizing and ability to pick up next task independently
  • In-depth knowledge of applications and services offered by ICE/NYSE
  • Knowledge of trading software, order book logic, and general principles of market data consumption
